A current is run through a coil, which in turn is hooked up to an oscilloscope. A 330 ohm resistor is placed between the positive and negative terminals of the coil. With the oscilloscope in storage mode, a sharp negative peak can be seen to coincide with a spark when one of the banana plugs is pulled from the power supply.
