COLLOQUIUM AND SEMINARS

Physics Colloquium

Thursday, October 21, 1999 at 3:30pm in Room 100 Willamette Hall

Dr. Rob Pisarski, Brookhaven National Lab., will speak on "The Jesse Tree of the Quark-Gluon Plasma."

Abstract: In the collisions of heavy nuclei at very high energies, it is believed that a new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma, may be produced. I review the theoretical basis for this belief, emphasizing results from lattice simulations. I also review the present status of experiment, including results from the AGS at Brookhaven, and the SPS, at CERN.

Refreshments will be served at 3:15pm in the Atrium.

Optics Seminar

Monday, October 18, 1999, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 240D Willamette Hall
Professor Mark Beck, Whitman College, will speak on "Noise Behavior of Pulsed, Vertical-Cavity, Surface-Emitting Lasers."

Theoretical Science Seminar

Tuesday, October 19, 1999 at 4:00 in 331 Klamath Hall
Dr. R. Kaiser, DESY Zeuthen, will speak on "Hermes and the Spin Structure of the Nucleon."
